2025 presidentials: PCRN picks Cabral Libii as flagbearer

Libii, a Member of Parliament and vocal opposition leader who finished third in the 2018 presidential election race, was nominated in what he described as a “transparent and democratic process” held in full compliance with the statutes of the PCRN party.

Cabral Libii has officially been endorsed as the presidential candidate of the Cameroonian Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN) ahead of Cameroon’s much-anticipated presidential election scheduled for October 2025. The announcement came during the party’s second ordinary congress held in Nkolafamba, on the outskirts of Yaoundé, drawing hundreds of supporters, party delegates, and prominent opposition figures. Libii, a Member of Parliament and vocal opposition leader who finished third in the 2018 presidential race, was nominated in what he described as a “transparent and democratic process” in full compliance with PCRN statutes. “We are now fully engaged in building a broad coalition that represents the aspirations of the Cameroonian people,” Libii declared in his acceptance speech.

The congress, whichh doubled as a political mobilization platform and a show of internal strength, comes amid persistent speculation over divisions within the party’s top ranks. However, Libii used the occasion to emphasize party unity and readiness for the upcoming election battle. In an emotional segment of his address, Libii thanked the party’s founding figures, Massardine Albert and Wanfeo Williams, both present at the congress. “You don’t even have an idea of everything they’ve done,” Libii said, revealing that he had once wrongly believed the founders supported opposition efforts against him. “In reality, they weren’t.” His remarks appeared to acknowledge past tensions while signaling a desire to mend internal rifts and strengthen the party’s base ahead of the polls.

Addressing the broader opposition landscape, Libii decried what he termed a “lack of humility and sacrifice” among fellow political actors, calling for a unified front to challenge the ruling establishment. “If you share the same ideas, is it so complicated to unite?” he asked, urging like-minded groups to prioritize national interest over personal ambition. The PCRN leader has long advocated for an inclusive political coalition capable of bringing about democratic change in Cameroon, a message he reiterated during the congress. As the October elections approach, Libii’s formal nomination signals a decisive turn in PCRN’s strategy.

While internal power struggles have challenged the party’s cohesion in recent years, the congress served as a reaffirmation of Libii’s authority and the party’s ambition to become a dominant political force. Describing the congress as more than a routine political event, Libii called it “the vibrant echo of popular hope” and “the expression of a youth that wants to build, of a country that wants to be reborn.”
