The president of the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation, PCRN party Hon. Cabral Libii has laid out a comprehensive policy proposal aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of young single mothers in Cameroon. Speaking during a live session on social media platform, TikTok, Cabral Libii was responding to a question from a viewer who raised concerns about the growing issue of young girls being abandoned by men after pregnancy. The opposition leader took the opportunity to detail a four-point action plan he says will form part of his social protection policy if elected president.
At the core of Cabral Libii’s proposal is the creation of a “Mandatory Parental Responsibility Law”. The law would ensure that any man legally recognized as the father of a child takes full responsibility for their offspring from the outset. Cabral Libii emphasized that the objective is to “end the impunity with which some men escape their obligations, leaving young girls and their families to bear the burden alone.”
Support for young mothers
Cabral Libii also proposed the establishment of a National Fund for Adolescent Mothers, a state-supported initiative designed to provide young mothers with access to healthcare, education, and vocational training. The fund, he explained, would work in partnership with communities and NGOs to provide not just relief but sustainable reintegration. “This is not just about offering temporary help,” Cabraal Libii said. “It’s about equipping these young women with the tools they need to build a future for themselves and their children.”
Reintegration and social inclusion
A key component of the plan includes a Reintegration Program that would facilitate the return of young mothers to school or professional training environments. Scholarships, counseling, and legal support would be made available to help ensure that early motherhood does not become a lifelong barrier to success. Beyond policy, the presidential hopeful is also advocating for a national awareness campaign focused on responsible sexuality, parenting, and the importance of men embracing their familial duties.
According to Cabral Libii, changing societal attitudes is as crucial as changing the laws. “We must shift the narrative so that young motherhood is not seen as a moral failure, but as a circumstance that calls for compassion, justice, and responsibility, especially from the fathers,” he said.
A vision of social justice
Cabral Libii’s proposal comes at a time when youth and women’s rights are increasingly shaping public discourse in Cameroon. While some critics may question the feasibility of such a broad program, others see it as a much-needed response to the challenges faced by thousands of young women nationwide. “This is about restoring dignity and ensuring that no young girl is forced into poverty or social isolation because of motherhood,” Cabral Libii affirmed. As the presidential race intensifies, observers say social policy could be a major battleground, and Cabral Libii’s proposal may resonate with a large segment of the youth and women electorate who are often sidelined in national politics.
