Secondary education: gov’t begins introducing smartboards to modernize teaching

Experts say with the rollout of the smartboards, Cameroon takes another major leap toward integrating cutting-edge digital solutions in its classrooms, reaffirming its vision for an inclusive and future-ready education system.
The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof Nalova Lyonga, has handed over 100 electronic boards to some secondary schools in an effort to further implement the digitalization of teaching and learning in secondary schools across the country. The ceremony which took place in Yaounde at the Distance Learning Centre of the Ministry of Secondary Education, on April 11, 2025, was attended by high-profile dignitaries including the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Cameroon.
His Excellency Volkan Oskiper, the Deputy President of Huawei for the CEMAC region, Mr. Léo Kung, representatives from education-focused NGOs such as PLAN Cameroon, senior officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education, and heads of beneficiary schools. This first batch of electronic boards is part of a total consignment of 350 expected to be distributed nationwide. The initiative is a cornerstone in the ongoing modernization of Cameroon’s secondary education system, aimed at creating an educational ecosystem that is fully equipped to meet 21st-century learning standards.
Each all-in-one electronic board is equipped with a 500 GB hard drive and integrates advanced functionalities such as whiteboard features, Windows applications, and Internet browsing. These boards support video conferencing, distance learning, and co-authoring capabilities, enabling both teachers and students to engage in dynamic, tech-driven educational experiences. During the event, a live demonstration showcased how the boards can enhance interactive learning, provide access to AI-powered tutorials, and allow the creation, storage, and transfer of educational data.
The tools also facilitate the use of multimedia in classrooms, significantly boosting the potential for improved learning outcomes among secondary school students. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Léo Kung praised the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a modern learning environment and reaffirmed Huawei’s dedication to supporting Cameroon’s educational goals.
He emphasized that the donation reflects the company’s strong belief in education as a driver of development. Minister Nalova Lyonga, in her remarks, expressed gratitude for Huawei’s continuous support and highlighted that the donation is part of a broader collaboration between Cameroon and the World Bank under the Secondary Education Skills and Development Project, known by its French acronym PADESCE.
She called on all education stakeholders to continue working together to modernise Cameroon’s secondary education system. “We are not just distributing equipment; we are shaping the future of our country through technology-driven education,” Professor Lyonga stated. With the rollout of these smart boards, Cameroon takes another major leap toward integrating cutting-edge digital solutions in its classrooms, reaffirming its vision for an inclusive and future-ready education system.
