The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof Nalova Lyonga has lauded the contributions made by Turkish institution, Turkish Maarif Foundation, in boosting Cameroon’s education. The member of government has also hailed the Foundation’s regular reporting to the government of Cameroon on its educational activities in Cameroon and the institution’s systematic approach to addressing school violence, which she said aligns with the educational priorities of the government. She made the declaration after she met with the Country Representative of the Turkish Maarif Foundation, Emra Kuçuk in Yaounde last Tuesday June 10 to review the foundation’s 2024/2025 academic report.

The discussion focused on violence prevention strategies implemented in Maarif schools across Cameroon and their academic achievements.  During the meeting at the Ministry of Secondary Education, Emra Kuçuk detailed comprehensive measures adopted by Maarif schools to maintain safe learning environments. Among them, student counseling programs, peer mediation systems, and enhanced security protocols which he said have contributed to reduced incidents of campus violence. He also noted that the foundation’s educational institutions have simultaneously maintained satisfactory academic performance levels.

Emra Kuçuk formally requested participation for Maarif schools in Cameroon’s FENASSCO League A school sports competitions. Minister Nalova Lyonga confirmed the ministry would review the request through proper administrative channels. The high-level meeting included several officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education. Among them, the Secretary of State for Teacher Training, Boniface Bayaola, Acting Secretary-General Djomnang Tchatchouang Léopold, and Prof Bello, Director of Projects, Planning and Cooperation. Officials said the presence of the authorities demonstrates the ministry’s interest with international educational partners.

The Turkish Maarif Foundation currently operates several educational institutions in Cameroon, providing primary through secondary education with an international curriculum. This meeting represents ongoing collaboration between Cameroonian education authorities and the foundation to enhance school safety standards and educational quality. The Ministry of Secondary Education is expected to follow up on the spot participation request after internal consultations.
