Nigerian: President Tinubu Warns Israel Over Iran Attacks, Urges Restraint and Dialogue

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has condemned Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, describing the attacks as a dangerous escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the federal government called for an immediate halt to the violence and appealed to both Iran and Israel to exercise maximum restraint. The government expressed deep concern over the sustained exchanges of missile and aerial attacks between the two countries, warning that continued aggression could undermine civilian safety and further destabilise the region  with potential ramifications for international peace and economic stability.

“Nigeria strongly condemns Israel’s preemptive attack on Iran, which has resulted in a dramatic escalation of hostilities. We urge both parties to cease violence immediately and pursue dialogue in the interest of regional and global stability,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement. The federal government reiterated its longstanding policy of peaceful resolution of disputes and called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council to help de-escalate tensions and facilitate constructive negotiations.

“Military action is not a substitute for dialogue. Sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law. We appeal to all stakeholders to pursue peace and avoid further escalation of conflict.”Nigeria pledged its readiness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening stability in the region.

“As a nation committed to the principles of non-aggression and multilateral diplomacy, we urge all involved to prioritize dialogue over aggression. The international community must redouble its efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution and avoid a spiral into a wider conflict.”
