Far north:  free health campaign to reach 500,000

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie, has been inspecting health facilities in Mora, Bogo, Mokolo, and Maroua to ensure preparedness for the campaign. The week-long event which runs from June 22 to June 29 is expected to benefit approximately 500,000 people, addressing critical health needs in the region.

A large-scale health campaign, called health promotion, will provide free medical services to residents of the Far North Region from June 22 to June 29. The initiative which is led by the Ministry of Public Health, aims to deliver essential healthcare to underserved populations, including general consultations, surgical interventions, and specialized treatments for conditions like obstetric fistulas and cataracts. A team of 1,865 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, and health technicians, will carry out the operations.

Services will range from basic medical check-ups to complex procedures, with a focus on reaching vulnerable groups who lack access to regular healthcare. The Far North Region have been facing significant health challenges, including limited infrastructure and high rates of preventable diseases. This campaign comes to alleviate some of these burdens by offering free, quality care to those in need. Pundits say the move highlights the government’s interest to improving healthcare accessibility, particularly in remote areas.

Similar campaigns in other regions have successfully provided vital medical assistance, like measles, polio, and human papillomavirus, HPV vaccines for children and adolescents reducing the strain on under-resourced facilities.  The health promotion campaign represents a critical effort to enhance wellbeing in the Far North Region, offering hope and relief to thousands of inhabitants.
