To enhance performance: gov’t reviews externally funded basic education initiatives

The review brought together government officials, development partners, and technical experts to assess the implementation of key initiatives supported by international funding.

The Ministry of Basic Education has initiated a comprehensive review of externally funded projects to evaluate their effectiveness in strengthening the country’s education system. This was during a two-day workshop organized in Yaounde from Monday June 16 to Tuesday June 17. The gathering was organized with the aim to enhance coordination among stakeholders and maximize the impact of international partnerships in the basic education sub-sector. The review brought together government officials, development partners, and technical experts to assess the implementation of key initiatives supported by international funding.

Discussions centered on achievements, operational challenges, and strategies to improve team work among stakeholders. The Minister of Basic Education, Prof Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa emphasized the importance of optimizing resources to address critical needs such as infrastructure development, teacher recruitment, and digital learning tools.

Special attention was given to the North West Region, where ongoing conflict has severely disrupted schooling. Speaking at the event, the Secretary of State to the Minster of Basic Education, Asheri Kilo, highlighted the essence of the review, stating that it will determine and evaluate the external funding that the basic education sector has from external partner to support the educational system. “Education is not the thing of the government, it is a collective responsibility,” she said. According to officials, externally funded programs are playing a crucial role mitigating the difficulties faced in the sector, including the recruitment and deployment of teachers, school feeding initiatives and the restoration of legal documents for displaced students.

These interventions, they say, have helped sustain education access despite security challenges.

Preparing for future progress

The workshop was expected to round up with the production of a roadmap for improving transparency and efficiency in project execution. Its findings, it was revealed, will contribute to a broader sector review later this year and support the implementation of the National Development Strategy, SND 2020-2030. By fostering stronger partnerships and refining implementation strategies, the government says it aims to ensure that external funding translates into lasting improvements in education quality and accessibility “Funding, finances, resources continue to be a problem that the government has been trying to tackle. We also use this moment to thank president Paul Biya for his continuous guidance,” Asheri Kilo said.
