Foumban: new health voucher program aims to save pregnant women lives

“Health Cheque” a new health voucher program announced by the Minister of Health in Foumban aiming to reduce maternal mortality by assisting with childbirth costs.

A health program has been launched nationwide, offering pregnant women a comprehensive package of maternal care services for a flat contribution. The program, known as the “Health Cheque,” ensures that expectant mothers in all ten regions of the country can access vital services.

These include prenatal consultations, assisted delivery by qualified personnel including C-sections when needed and postnatal follow-up for up to 42 days after birth.

The initiative is a key part of the government’s drive toward Universal Health Coverage, aiming to decouple access to medical care from an individual’s ability to pay according to the minister. At its core, the principle is that “no woman should die giving life.” For a one-time payment, the voucher provides financial relief to families by removing cost barriers at the time of birth.

A primary goal is to reverse the troubling statistic that over 50% of women in some regions still give birth at home. The minister says. The program’s expansion is being supported by efforts to strengthen local health systems. This includes training medical staff, upgrading facilities, and accrediting new health centers, including those in rural areas.
