October 12 poll:  security forces ready for proclamation

Just days after voting ended on October 12, 2025, cities like Dschang and Garoua have seen angry protests, prompting security forces to launch drills aimed at maintaining order as the tense nation awaits official results.

The period following the presidential vote has been marked by significant unrest. Just days after the polls closed, cities including Douala, Bafoussam and Garoua witnessed violent protests. These demonstrations began as unofficial election results started to circulate, leading supporters of various candidates to claim victory. Reports confirm that these protests have resulted in significant damage to property.

In response, the National Gendarmerie has publicly deployed its units for training exercises. Official photos released by the force show personnel conducting drills focused on crowd control and managing acts of violence. A statement from the Gendarmerie explained these actions are to ensure the protection of persons and their property, and to maintain public order.

The Gendarmerie’s statement directly linked the drills to the ongoing protests, which it said are perpetrated by protesters who claim victory for their candidate. The force pledged to act with professionalism and resolve to uphold public order. This security response unfolds amid a backdrop of widespread fraud allegations surrounding the election.

The current President, 92-year-old President Paul Biya, is a candidate seeking an eighth term in office which voters have said the need change.  As the national vote counting commission continues its work in Yaounde, the public display of security force preparedness points to official concerns over further instability when the results are declared.
