Presidential election: Biya accepts new heavy responsibility

Following a divisive election, President Paul Biya addressed the nation after the results were proclaimed, mourning those lost to violence and pledging to lead a united path forward.

In his first speech since the election, the president spoke directly to a nation wounded by recent turmoil in a note. He began by honoring those who lost their lives in the post-election violence and shared his condolences with grieving families. This somber opening set a tone of recognition for the difficult period the country has endured.

He acknowledged the heavy responsibility the people have placed upon him and expressed a deep understanding of their hopes, especially those of the youth and women who are eager for progress. His words sought to bridge the divisions laid bare by the electoral process, extending a hand to all citizens regardless of how they voted.

Looking beyond the campaign, he shared a hopeful vision for the future. He called on everyone to join him in a shared mission to build a country that is peaceful, united, and prosperous. He described this not just as a goal, but as a duty that all citizens owe to their beloved homeland. He commended everyone who participated in the election, framing their involvement as a sign of a vibrant democracy.

He said: “I wish to particularly extend my sincere thanks to all the voters who chose me.”
