Anti-corruption fight: CONAC hands SW poor rating

The National Anti-Corruption Commission, CONAC, has described the region as one of the most corrupt in the country

The National Anti-Corruption Commission, CONAC, has revealed that the South West Region is one of the most corrupt in the country. The commission has handed the region a 9/10 rating in anti-corruption fight, placing the zone as a region that has corrupted deeply rooted in various sectors of society. The chairman of CONAC, Reverend Dieudonné Massi Gams, made this statement during a workshop in Buea yesterday.

The workshop, which brought together stakeholders from various sectors, focused on the implementation of the 2022 Regional Anti-Corruption Action Plan and explored strategies to strengthen the ongoing fight against corruption in the region. According to official reports from CONAC, corruption has become pervasive in the Southwest, infiltrating nearly every level of service delivery.

The region’s corruption index is among the highest in the country, with the region ranked nineth out of 10 in terms of corruption levels. The CONAC Chairman, Rev Massi Gams expressed alarm over the situation, highlighting the widespread nature of corruption that affects service efficiency. He emphasized that corruption significantly hampers the proper functioning of various public services. “The situation is very concerning,” Rev Massi Gam stated. “There is no sector without corruption.

Services are not being properly executed, and this is reflected in the region’s overall poor ranking.” Stakeholders attending the workshop were made aware of the factors contributing to the region’s high corruption rate. The session underlined the shared responsibility of citizens and public servants in eradicating this vice. Rev Massi Gam called for a collective effort to combat corruption and emphasized that every individual has a role to play in addressing the issue.

The workshop also included the distribution of the revised National Anti-Corruption Strategy Plan to stakeholders, aiming to empower them with the knowledge and tools needed for concrete action. The updated strategy emphasizes the importance of intentional and proactive efforts in tackling corruption. A strong core of the plan encourages public servants to work in the service of the people, ensuring that they are not exploiting the population but rather serving it with integrity.

The ongoing efforts to combat corruption in the South West region are part of a broader national campaign to address the deep-seated issue of corruption within Cameroon. The workshop is seen as a critical step in raising awareness and empowering stakeholders to take action against corruption at every level.
