Center: SDO bans sale of alcoholic drinks at funerals

The move by the civil administrator aims to promote a more respectful and dignified atmosphere at these solemn occasions, ensuring that mourners can pay their respects without disruptions

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, of Nyong and Mfoumou Division of the Center Region, François Etap has banned the sale of alcoholic beverages during funeral ceremonies throughout the division in a bid to maintain decorum and order during funeral ceremonies. The move aims to promote a more respectful and dignified atmosphere at these solemn occasions, ensuring that mourners can pay their respects without disruptions. The ban reflects the authorities’ efforts to prioritize public safety and well-being in the community.

The decision, formalized in an order signed on May 12, 2025, applies to all forms of street vending of alcohol at funeral locations, including during traditional overnight wakes. Authorities cite a growing number of disturbances and violent incidents linked to alcohol consumption at such gatherings. “As of the date of this order, the street sale of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited throughout the territory of Nyong and Mfoumou Division, particularly in locations where funerals are held,” the document reads.

The order warns that violators will face penalties as outlined in Articles 17, 18, and 19 of Decree No. 90/1483 of November 9, 1990, which regulates the operation of drinking establishments, as well as Article 273 of the Penal Code. Responsibility for enforcing the measure has been assigned to the Divisional Office, the Departmental Delegate of Commerce, and the heads of law enforcement units in the division.

The directive has already sparked debate among residents, with some welcoming the move as necessary to preserve dignity and peace at funerals, while others view it as an infringement on long-held traditions. The implementation of the order is expected to be immediate.
