Central Africa: Camwater drums subscription as Cameroon leads water production

The Director General of the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation, Camwater, Blaise Moussa, made the call at the ongoing Government Action Fair, SAGO at the Yaoundé City Council on June 30, while emphasizing Cameroon’s unmatched leadership in water production across Central and East Africa.

At the 14th edition of the Government Action Fair, SAGO 2025, the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation, Camwater, led by its Director General, Blaise Moussa made a compelling call to citizens to subscribe to the national water network, emphasizing the country’s unmatched leadership in water production across Central and East Africa. Speaking during the event, the Director General of Camwater highlighted the remarkable strides Cameroon has made under the leadership of President Paul Biya in ensuring access to clean and potable water.

He stated that Cameroon currently produces 1,250,000 cubic meters of water per day, making it the largest producer of drinking water in Central Africa, a figure that surpasses that of countries often considered continental leaders in infrastructure. “The figures speak for themselves,” the Director General declared. “Another African country produces only 770,000 cubic meters daily, yet they have over two million subscribers. Meanwhile, we produce far more and have only around 500,000 subscribers nationwide.” In Yaoundé alone, the number of registered subscribers is below 120,000, a figure the Camwater boss described as “shockingly low,” given the size of the population and the daily demand for water.

He expressed concern that many of the loudest complaints on social media about water access often come from individuals or households who are not officially subscribed to Camwater. “We’re encouraging everyone to take the necessary steps. Visit our offices, pay only the official fees, and subscribe. The water is available in the networks, we just need more homes connected,” he urged. Camwater also used the SAGO platform to praise the government’s efforts in modernizing the water sector, particularly the commissioning of the PAEPYS plant, described as the largest drinking water production plant in Africa, with a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day, extendable to 400,000.

According to the Director General, this infrastructure symbolizes Cameroon’s clear vision under President Paul Biya to meet Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 on clean water and sanitation. Looking to the future, the country is set to host the African Water and Sanitation Congress and an international exhibition in February 2026. The event, authorized by President Biya, is expected to attract over 6,000 global experts and stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector. Activities will be centered at the Yaoundé Conference Centre, with additional venues across the city. In terms of targets,

Camwater has been instructed to deliver 200,000 new household subscriptions this year, and aims to reach one million connections within five years, directly impacting an estimated five million citizens. The director also pointed to ongoing rural water supply initiatives led by the Ministry of Water and Energy, including the SEA-WASH project, aimed at expanding coverage to underserved areas. Before closing his remarks, the Camwater chief issued a strong reminder to the public: “Pay your subscription fees and demand the service.

If you are not connected within 72 hours, report it. Sanctions will follow.” As Cameroon positions itself as a regional leader in water production and access, the message from Camwater is clear: the infrastructure is ready, the next step is for citizens to take full ownership through active participation and subscription. The event which started on June 28, is expected to draw its curtains on July 5, 202.
