Douala: Bonabéri Port celebrates 150 years

The Port of Douala, a cornerstone of Cameroon economy, has marked its 150th anniversary in a grand ceremony led by the Prime Minister, who honored its historic role as the nation’s vital commercial gateway.

The Port Authority of Douala (PAD) celebrated its 150th anniversary on September 26, 2025, in a ceremony at Quay 14 presided over by the Prime Minister, Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute. Representing the Head of State, the Prime Minister described the port as the “cradle of Cameroon,” highlighting its long-standing commercial heritage dating back a century and a half.

The event, which featured a solemn libation by Sawa chiefs, brought together a wide array of dignitaries and economic actors. The PAD is a vital pillar of the national economy, handling 70% of domestic trade and nearly 80% of customs revenue, while also generating about 14% of the country’s formal jobs.

The PAD’s Director General, Cyrus Ngo’o, paid tribute to past generations and announced that the port is undergoing its most significant physical transformation since the 1970s. This is due to recent major investments and the public company’s resumption of management
