End of year exams: over 384 thousand pupils seek admission into secondary schools

Additionally, about 100,000 candidates wrote the entrance examination into the first year of technical and vocational education.

More than 384,000 pupils across the country have taken part in this year’s national entrance examinations into secondary schools, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s basic and secondary education system. The examinations, organized by the ministries of basic and secondary education, catered to learners from both the Anglophone and Francophone sub-systems of education. Close to 134,000 pupils from English-speaking regions sat the Common Entrance Examination into Form One, while approximately 150,000 of their French-speaking counterparts wrote the Concours d’entrée en sixième.

Additionally, about 100,000 candidates wrote the entrance examination into the first year of technical and vocational education. The smooth conduct of the exams was confirmed by the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga, who visited several examination centers in the capital, Yaoundé. Speaking to reporters, the minister expressed satisfaction with the organization, discipline, and increasing use of digital tools by teaching staff and examiners. “I’m very pleased. It’s all smooth. We have not had any cases of violence or indiscipline. There is a mastery of computers and software that makes me really happy,” she noted. “It’s good that the teachers are beginning to get used to using computers to enter all their material.

It makes their work easier and more efficient.” The member of government in charge of secondary education also gave on-the-spot instructions to staff regarding the cleanliness and presentation of classrooms, some of which she described as having structural issues. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a conducive and decent environment for learning and examinations. “The rooms need to be clean and smooth because some of them have a lot of holes and don’t look decent. I gave them a few instructions on that,” she stated. Accompanied by the head of the examinations department, the Minister lauded the commitment of teachers and examiners, adding that the adherence to guidelines issued by the ministry was commendable.

This year’s exercise is part of the government’s ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing Cameroon’s education system, with a focus on digitization, accountability, and equitable access to education for learners in all ten regions of the country. With the completion of these examinations, successful candidates will be placed into general and technical secondary schools across the nation for the 2025 academic year. Results are expected in the coming weeks.
