Energy Compact:  CMR launches national plan to power 8 million more lives by 2030

At the UN General Assembly, Cameroon has launched a major Energy Compact, outlining its national plan to help achieve the 300 Mission target of electrifying 300 million Africans by the end of the decade.

Cameroon has officially launched its Energy Compact during the 79th UN General Assembly. Backed by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and Bloomberg Philanthropies, the plan aims to connect millions more citizens to the grid by 2030 and position the country as a central energy hub.

Cameroon has launched a comprehensive national Energy Compact, a major initiative designed to transform its electricity sector and drive economic growth. The ambitious plan was unveiled in New York by the country’s Ministers of Water and Energy and Finance.

It sets a clear goal to connect over eight million more Cameroonians to the national. To achieve this, the country plans to significantly boost its power generation capacity to 3,000 megawatts. This will be done by building new hydroelectric dams and hybrid solar power plants.

The government also aims to extend high-voltage transmission lines and secure the power supply for urban and suburban areas to reduce blackouts. A key part of the compact is promoting clean cooking solutions for 40% of households. This is seen as essential for combating deforestation and improving public health officials says.

Developed with public, private, and civil society input, the Compact builds on Cameroon’s interest to the “Mission 300” initiative, which aims to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030. Beyond its national impact, the plan positions Cameroon to become an energy hub for Central Africa, with the potential to supply reliable and competitive electricity to the wider CEMAC region.
