Football: colombe crowned elite one champions

The club becomes the first team from the South Region to bag a first division championship title in Cameroon.

South Region football powerhouse, Colombe Sportive has been crowned champions of the 2024/2025 first division football championship, the MTN Elite One. The team secured the title last Sunday after comfortably outsmarting last year’s winners, Victoria United Football Club of Limbe at the Military Stadium in Yaounde. The club humbled the 2023/2024 winners 3nil during the matchday 27 fixture. The victory over the One People One Power club pushed Colombe’s point count to 60points.

With the second-placed team on the standing, Panthere of Nde counting just 49points, the Sunday result means Colombe now has a lead that cannot be closed by any of the teams that are featuring in the ongoing race. Colombe has played just 25 of its overall 30 matches while Panthere has staged 27 of its games and is now left with three matches to conclude the season. If the Nde Division team manages to win all its last three matches, it will only climb to 58points which will not be enough to outpoint Colombe which already has 60points and equally has as many as five more matches to stage before the campaign comes to an end.

Coton Sport of Garoua and its sister team, Gazelle Football Academy who are placed third and fourth on the standing, have 48 and 47points respectively and are both also out of the race.  This is Colombe’s first ever first division championship crown. This is also the first time that a club from the South Region is bagging home the winner’s title in the top-tier championship in Cameroon since it was introduced some seven decades ago. The league crown adds to the 2024 Cup of Cameroon distinction that the outfit secured last year to also become the first ever outfit from the South Region to bag home the national challenge cup trophy in the country.

As champions of Cameroon, Colombe will represent the country in the CAF Champions League next season. The CAF Champions League is Africa’s biggest men’s club football competition. Colombe will begin its race in the competition in preliminary stages.

Union Douala demoted

In the bottom half of the championship, Union of Douala made history over the weekend after it got demoted from the topflight championship at the end of matchday 27 actions. The Littoral Region club has 19points with three match days to the end of the season. The tally means the club will not be able to escape from the drop zone even if it comes out victorious in all its last matches.

This is the first time that Union is getting demoted from the Elite One championship since it gained promotion into the league in 1958. During its close to seven decades stay in the topflight, the club has bagged five league titles, six Cup of Cameroon crowns, one CAF Champions League trophy and a CAF Cup Winners Cup gong. Its last trophy is the Elite One title that it secured 13 years ago.
