Eight teams are competing for two qualification tickets to the first division championship while seven teams will enter the relegation playoff with eyes on four tickets that will enable them retain their place in the second-tier competition for next season’s campaign.
The playoff phase of the 2024/2025 second division football championship will get underway this Thursday June 12. Eight teams will feature in the promotion playoff series with eyes on two available tickets into first division competition, the MTN Elite One. The competition will be staged in a round-robin format with each of the participating teams facing each other once. Seven teams will enter the relegation playoff series with focus on maintaining their second-tier status. The three bottom-placed teams in the series at the end of the round-robin series will be relegated at the end of the tournament.
Matches of the promotion series will be held at the Mbappe Leppe Stadium and Annex of the Reunifications Stadium, both in the Littoral Region. The relegation series will be staged at the FECAFOOT Technical Centre and the CAF Excellence Centre in Mbankomo, both outside the capital Yaounde in the Centre Region. The two competitions will run from June 12 to June 30 featuring a combined total of 48 matches across the two divisions.
Hectic opening day
Three matches will take place in the promotion series this Thursday. The series will flag off with the game pitting five-time Cameroon champions, Tonnerre Kalara Club of Yaounde against 1996 Elite One title winners, Unisport of Bafang from the West Region. The fixture will begin at 1:30pm at the Mbappe Leppe Stadium. The same facility will host the game pitting Avion Academy of Nkam in the Littoral Region against the North West Region’s Bafmeng United Football Academy. The game will begin at 3:30pm.
The Annex of the Reunifications Stadium will as from 1:30pm, host the fixture between Aigle of the Menoua against Atlantic Sport Academy of Kribi from the South Region. The same facility will play host to the 3:30pm fixture pitting 2017 Elite One champions, Eding Sport Football Club of the Lekie against North West Region’s Ngoketunjia United Football Academy. Ngoketunjia United is aiming to gain its maiden topflight promotion.
Relegation playoff
The relegation series will open with three matches scheduled for the FECAFOOT Technical Centre in Odza this Thursday. As from 11:30pm, four-time former Elite One champions, Racing Football Club of Bafoussam will faceoff with Yaounde II Football Club. FAP of Yaounde will lock horns with Union Sportive of Abong Mbang at the same facility as from 1:30pm while Fovu Club of Baham will entertain ISOHSA of Limbe as from 3:30pm. Home team, Apejes of Mfou will be on standby as the only outfit that is exempted on the opening round of the competition.
