The Central region council area of Lobo transformed into a vibrant hub of female empowerment as Cameroonian joined the global community in observing the 14th International Day of the Girl.
Originally scheduled for October 11, but rescheduled due to presidential elections, the October 21 celebration brought together government officials, technical partners, and most importantly, young girls under the powerful theme, « The Girl I Am, The Change I Wish to See, Girls on the Frontlines of Crises ».
The official ceremony at Lobo’s party hall witnessed significant governmental presence, featuring the representative of the Minister of Women Empowerment and the Family, alongside the senior divisional officers, the First Deputy Mayor, and technical partners. However, the true stars of the event were the young female students from Lobo subdivision, whose voices and potential took center stage in meaningful discussions about their future and role in society.
The day activities unfolded through an engaging forum that created genuine dialogue between Women’s empowerment ministry officials and the local students. This interactive session addressed crucial topics affecting young women today, including voluntary HIV testing, the vulnerability of girls to drugs and HIV, and the prevention of sexual violence.
The conversations extended to digital literacy, exploring both the responsible use of social media and the opportunities presented by technology, while also emphasizing the importance of mentorship and leadership development for young women. The second phase of the ceremony focused on translating discussion into action through the presentation of recommendations emerging from the student forum.
Technical partners like the World Food Program shared their insights and support mechanisms available to young women. The commemorative speech delivered by the representative of the Women’s empowerment ministry said girls are not just here to receive help, but are important leaders who can help solve problems and build the country.
The event stood as a testament to Cameroon wants every girl to have the power to make positive changes in their community.
