MTN Elite Two: ISOHSA relegated, aigle, unisport earn topflight promotion

The demotion ends the club’s two-year stay in the second division championship.

South West Region team, Isles of Hope Sports Academy, ISOHSA of Limbe, has been relegated from the second to the third division football championship while West Region sides; Aigle of Menoua and Unisport of Bafang, have been promoted to the top division. ISOHSA was demoted to the third tier after registering a nightmarish run in the relegation playoff phase of the 2024/2025 MTN Elite Two championship competition. The drop was confirmed after the team lost four of the five matches that it has so far played in the competition and had its survival bid further compounded by a heavy sanction placed on them by the Homologation and Disciplinary Committee of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT.

The team was sanctioned with a fine of 500 thousand FCFA and hit with a 3points point deduction after it abandoned its match day three game against Centre Region outfit, Apejes of Mefou. The club walked out of the game following an incident that culminated in the central referee of the match headbutting its team captain. Following the controversial game which took place the weekend before last, the side bounced back to humble Fovu of Baham with a 2-0 win last Thursday to slightly revive its survival bid.

But things however got back to normal setting on Sunday June 29 when five-time Elite One champions, Tonnerre of Yaounde spanked the club with a 4-1 win. The poor displays see the club leading the contingent of three teams that will be relegated from the second division championship at the end of the current campaign in the MTN Elite Two competition. ISOHSA gained promotion to the Elite Two in 2023 after emerging champions of the 2023 National Interpools tournament which took place in Yaounde.

The club ended the regular season of the current campaign ranking fifth in Group A of the competition after registering 22points in 14 matches. The team concluded the race with just four points fewer than Aigle of Menoua which placed fourth and picked the pool’s final ticket to the promotion playoff phase of the championship. ISOHSA had a similar challenge in the competition during the 2023/2024 season. ISOHSA placed fifth in Group B at the end of the regular series in last season’s campaign after managing 22points, one fewer than Panthère of Nde which went on to qualify for the Elite One that term.

The Fako Division club however avoided relegation after registering five wins, one victory and a draw in its five matches to finish top of the relegation survival log.

Aigle, Unisport gain Elite One promotion

In the promotion playoff series, Aigle qualified for the top-flight league after registering seven wins in all seven of its matches in the competition. The win marks the return of the team after just a year in the inferior league. The club was relegated from the Elite One at the end of the 2023/2024 Elite One campaign. Another West Region side, Unisport of Bafang qualified after posting five victories and a defeat in its seven matches.

The club ended the race with 18points from a possible 21, three points behind champions Aigle Menoua. Unisport’s promotion marks the end of its six-year stay in the inferior league. The side was relegated from the Elite One championship in 2019.
