NW: Matazem-Bamenda highway nears grand rebirth

The long-awaited reconstruction of critical road infrastructure in Cameroon’s North-West Region is making substantial progress, with two major sections of the National Highway N°6 Matazem-Welcome to Bamenda and Welcome to Bamenda–École des Champions nearing completion.

According to updates from the Ministry of Public Works, the 18-kilometer Matazem-Welcome to Bamenda section has reached a remarkable 89.5% completion rate. As of June 2, 2025, 17.8 kilometers of the bituminous concrete wearing course have been laid. Road signage installation is ongoing, and a double surface dressing has already been applied on the shoulders covering 16.1 kilometers. Meanwhile, work on the adjacent 4.93-kilometer Welcome to Bamenda–École des Champions stretch has reached 61.2% completion.

The base course, made of bituminous-bound graded aggregates, is currently being laid, while the subgrade course implementation is progressing steadily. A total of 3.8 kilometers of subgrade has been executed. Both projects are being undertaken by construction firm Bun’s and are expected to be completed in the coming weeks. The developments are projected to significantly improve transportation efficiency, trade routes, and economic activity in the North-West Region, particularly in and around Bamenda.

École des Champions–Amour Mezam road also progressing steadily

In a parallel effort, the Ministry of Public Works has also reported solid advancements on the 5.5-kilometer École des Champions–Amour Mezam road section, another critical component of the Babadjou–Bamenda corridor. Despite operational challenges in the area, the contractor has fully completed the subgrade across the entire 5.5 km. The sub-base has been laid over 4.6 kilometers, the tack coat over 2.9 kilometers, and the base course over 2.8 kilometers. The road is being upgraded into a dual 2×2 lane carriageway, aligning with national highway standards.

Drainage infrastructure is also moving forward. Over 6.7 kilometers of kerbs, T2 + CS2, out of the projected 11 km have been installed. More than 11,470 linear meters of gutters have been completed. Additionally, all seven planned box culverts have been constructed, signaling progress in flood mitigation and water management. The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to delivering durable and quality infrastructure, highlighting the strategic importance of these road projects in improving connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth in the region.

These developments are part of a broader initiative to modernize Cameroon’s road network, especially in conflict-affected and underserved areas, aiming to stimulate inclusive national development and regional integration.
