Phonic Fusion: key to mastering english language with ease

Developed by star-developer, Ngohoba Vigny Sayal to help French speakers, master English language pronunciation.

A 26-year-old biochemistry PhD student at the University of Yaoundé 1, Ngohoba Vigny Sayal faced significant technical hurdles while creating an AI-powered language tool, particularly when trying to develop a mobile version of a Python-based prototype. Being a non-computer scientist, Sayal struggled to adapt his desktop application for mobile platforms the most requested format during the JCIA (Jeunesse Camerounaise Innovante et Audacieuse) event. The biochemistry researcher also encountered challenges promoting his novel concept in the specialized field of English language phonetics, where AI-assisted pronunciation training remains relatively unknown.

Sayal developed the idea after observing how many French speakers, despite understanding English grammar rules, remain hesitant to speak the language. His solution allows users to practice conversational English with artificial intelligence in a private, judgment-free environment. The prototype, completed in November 2024, represents one of the first applications of AI specifically designed to address pronunciation challenges for Francophone learners. “Currently in the development phase, the project demonstrates how academic researchers can apply programming skills to solve real-world problems outside their primary field” he explains.

Sayal continues working to overcome the technical limitations of his prototype while seeking effective ways to introduce his innovative learning tool to potential users. The young innovator’s journey highlights both the promise and challenges of developing educational technology solutions in Cameroon. His AI pronunciation assistant could potentially help bridge the gap between theoretical English language knowledge and practical speaking ability for many French language speakers, if he can successfully navigate the remaining development and marketing obstacles.
