In a strong and direct response to the recent violence and public disturbances that erupted in Garoua in the North Region after the elections, the local administration has taken a firm step to restore calm. A similar law has been imposed in Douala in the Littoral Region.
The Senior Divisional Officer of Bénoué in the North Region has imposed an immediate and sweeping nighttime ban on all motorcycle circulation across the region’s chief town, Garoua, marking a decisive response to the post-election turmoil that has disrupted the city’s peace. This stringent measure, now in full force from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM daily, aims to dismantle the operational capacity of troublemakers who have exploited the cover of darkness to orchestrate violence and public disorder.
The decision specifically targets what authorities have identified as a key enabler of the chaos: the rapid and often untraceable movement provided by motorcycles under night’s veil. By removing this primary mode of transport during these critical hours, the administration seeks to severely curtail the ability of destabilizing elements to gather, coordinate, and execute their disruptive activities.
The ban is not presented as a temporary restriction but as a vital and sustained strategy for restoring order, remaining effective indefinitely until public safety is conclusively reestablished. A clear warning accompanies this decree, any violation will be met with swift and unyielding legal consequences. This shows the perturbation it causes and the governments interest in solving to treat this not as a mere advisory but as a critical law enforcement directive.
To ensure rigorous and uniform implementation, the Prefect has mobilized the entire security apparatus. The chief of Garoua three administrative subdivisions, alongside the Central Police Commissioner and the commanding officers of the Gendarmerie, have been personally tasked with enforcing the curfew.
This coordinated effort creates a seamless security net across the city, demonstrating an unwavering official commitment to halting the disorder, protecting law-abiding citizens and their property, and steering Garoua firmly back toward the path of stability and calm.
