Rural Women’s Day: Minister leads celebration of women’s resilience amid climate challenges

Women celebrated the 30th edition of World Rural Women’s Day in Songmbengue, Sanaga Maritime Division of the Littoral Region last Friday during an event led by the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Prof Therese Abena Ondoa.

Women celebrated the 30th edition of World Rural Women’s Day in Songmbengue, Sanaga Maritime, and last Friday. The event brought together government officials, community leaders, and development partners under the theme “Rural Women Facing the Challenges of Climate Change and Access to Productive Resources” to address pressing issues affecting women in rural areas. Presided over by Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Family, Abena Ondoa, the ceremony featured the distribution of essential material kits to 12 local networks across Sanaga Maritime and three neighboring departments.

These kits, the minister says are designed to provide practical support to women who form the backbone of the local economy, helping them build resilience against climate change and economic challenges. The event saw participation from several high-profile figures, including Transport Minister Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe and the senior divisional officer of Sanaga Maritime, Cyril Yvan Abondo.

Their presence, alongside representatives from UNFPA and other partner organizations, highlighted the collective commitment to empowering rural women and addressing the structural barriers they face. Through agricultural exhibitions and discussions, the day emphasized the need for improved access to land, credit, and infrastructure for rural women.

The celebrations not only recognized their contributions to food security and community well-being but also reinforced ongoing efforts to enhance their adaptive capacity in the face of environmental and socio-economic changes, Prof Abena Andoa concluded.
