The Under17 Lionesses will challenge the Asian powerhouse as from 2pm at the Mohammed VI Football Academy Pitch 2 in Salé.
The Under17 women’s national football team of Cameroon will battle record three-time champions, North Korea this Tuesday in its second Group B outing at the FIFA Under17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. The Under17 Lionesses will challenge the Asian team at the Mohammed VI Football Academy Pitch 2 in Salé in northwestern Morocco.
The fixture will get underway at 2pm Cameroon time. Team Cameroon which is managed by celebrated trainer, head coach Josephine Mike Ndoumou, is expected to bag all three points in the game to ensure that it boost its chances of qualifying for the second round of the tournament as one of the top two teams in the pool or one of the best four third-placed teams at the conclusion of the ongoing group stage series. Cameroon was handed a 4-3 defeat by newly-crowned European champions, the Netherlands last Saturday in its first game.
The result led to the U17 Lionesses completing day one matches sitting third on the pool’s tentative classification table, three points behind North Korea and the Netherlands. Cameroon has met with North Korea in the final phase of the U17 Women’s World Cup only once since the competition was launched in 2008. The meeting dates back to November 2018 when Cameroon went down with a 2-1 loss to the Asian giants in the final round of matches in the group stages of the 2018 edition of the competition.
On the books, Cameroon is a complete underdog in front of North Korea. Cameroon which is making its third participation in the finals of the U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup, has never sailed through to the second round of the competition. The team ended its campaign during its debut in 2016 sitting rock-bottom in its pool and ranked third in Group B during the 2018 series. North Korea, on their side, is the most distinguished team in the competition.
The outfit has claimed three winners’ trophies in the event, including that of the 2024 edition which took place in the Dominican Republic last year. The 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup flagged off in Morocco last Saturday with the host nation suffering a 3nil loss in the opening match to Brazil. A total of 24 countries are competing in the tournament.
The teams are pooled across six teams of four teams each. The sides are presently chasing 16 tickets to the second round of the competition. The tickets will be reserved for the top two teams from across the six pools and the four best third-placed teams.
